Effective font combinations are a hallmark of good design.

Good typography and using the best font combinations elevate a design from its peers and create a more delightful user experience.

Learning to combine fonts effectively is an important stepping stone in a designer’s education and one that should continuously be refined and improved upon.

Designers who master typography can make even the simplest design more effective.

Font Weights  Too much difference can make the lighter typeface practically disappear. 
A very bold font like Avenir Next doesn't pair well with a very light font like  Helvetica Neue UltraLight. 
But Avenir Next works better with something a little bolder, like Helvetica Neue Regular.

Contrast  Too much is jarring, too little is virtually unnoticeable, but the right amount lets each typeface shine.

X-height  Typefaces with similar x-heights will work better together than those with varying x-heights. 
Helvetica Neue x-height matches Playfair Display's x-height. 
Whereas Helvetica Neue x-height doesn't match Baskerville's x-height.

Font Structure  As pointed out by Type Burrito, Arvo and Lato have similar structures, despite being from different classifications. This makes them coordinate well while still providing contrast.

Combine a serif with a sans serif  Helvetica for Header 
Georgia for body copy. A safe bet when it comes to pairing fonts is to combine a serif font with a sans serif font. However, you also want to stay away from fonts that are so different that they tread the fine line between contrast and discord.
