Catalog-fed AI searches convert at 2x vs general AI search. That's a data-quality mandate.
Shopify's Q1 2026 numbers are out: GMV hit $101B, up 35% YoY. AI-driven traffic is up around 8x, orders from AI search nearly 13x year over year. The 13x is a good headline. The 2x conversion delta when the AI is pulling from your actual product catalog is the number worth acting on.
Here's what's happening: when a user asks ChatGPT or Claude "what's the best supplement for joint support under $60?" and your product feed is supplying the answer, conversion rates double compared to when the AI reconstructs a best-guess product description from general web text. The delta comes from specificity. Catalog-fed responses are accurate - correct price, correct variant, correct specs. General AI responses are approximate.
The gap closes with data hygiene. Specifically:
1. Feed title structure. GMC titles need the full attribute string: brand + product name + key spec + size/variant. "Premium Omega-3 Softgels" doesn't answer a query about dosage or capsule count. "Nordic Naturals Omega-3 1000mg Fish Oil Softgels 180ct" does. The AI is matching queries it hasn't seen before - it needs the context in the title.
2. Review density and query relevance. AI search surfaces products with reviews that answer the likely query. Reviews mentioning "joint health" outperform generic 5-star text when someone asks about joint health. GMC product review feed quality and Yotpo export fidelity matter here.
3. Spec completeness in structured fields. Ingredients, dimensions, certifications, use cases - all in structured metadata, not buried in description paragraphs. The AI is parsing fields, not extracting from prose.
4. Product schema on the Shopify page. Even outside marketplace feeds, the AI crawlers are reading your site. Product schema (name, description, offers, aggregateRating, brand) is the minimum. Without it, the AI has to infer.
If you're a Shopify brand builder running supplements, beauty, or any repurchase-cycle vertical, audit the GMC feed and product schema before you adjust bids or rebuild creative. The 2x conversion delta lives in the data layer, not the ad account.
