Most brands try to scale Google Ads by increasing budgets. That is the last step, not the first.
We have taken 20+ brands from $20k to $500k/month. The pattern is always the same: the brands that scale fast are the ones that fix their foundation first. The brands that stall are the ones that skip it.
This audit has two parts:
Together, these 19 checks tell you exactly where you stand and what to fix before adding a single dollar of budget.
Time to complete: 20-30 minutes with your Google Ads and Merchant Center accounts open.
Every item has a hard pass/fail threshold. No partial credit. If any single item fails, fix it before increasing spend.
Eight out of nine is not enough. The one you skip will be the one that costs you later.
Threshold: Values match your order management system within 5% over a 30-day window.
How to check: Pull total conversion value from Google Ads for the last 30 days. Pull total order revenue from Shopify, WooCommerce, or your OMS for the same period. Divide the smaller number by the larger number. If the result is 0.95 or higher, you pass.
Why it matters: If your conversion values are off by more than 5%, Google's Smart Bidding is optimizing toward wrong numbers. A 15% overcount means the algorithm thinks campaigns are more profitable than they are. It will spend more aggressively on traffic that does not actually convert at the reported rate.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Google Ads conversion value within 5% of OMS revenue (30-day window) |
| FAIL | Discrepancy exceeds 5%, or you cannot pull both numbers to compare |
Threshold: Exactly 1 purchase conversion action set to Primary in Google Ads.
How to check: Go to Google Ads > Goals > Conversions. Filter to show actions "Included in Conversions." Count how many purchase-type actions appear. You should see one.
Why it matters: Multiple purchase actions counting the same event means every sale is double-counted. Google sees 2x the conversions at half the real CPA. The algorithm bids more aggressively because it thinks performance is better than reality. When you fix this later, performance "drops" overnight - it was never real.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Exactly 1 purchase action as Primary |
| FAIL | Multiple purchase actions, or zero purchase actions as Primary |
Threshold: Enhanced conversions enabled AND verified sending hashed data via Tag Assistant.
How to check: Go to your conversion action settings and confirm the toggle is on. Then open Google Tag Assistant, complete a test purchase, and look at the conversion tag details. Enhanced conversion parameters (hashed email, name, or address) should appear in the tag payload.
Why it matters: Enhanced conversions recover 10-30% of conversion data lost to cookie restrictions, especially from Safari and iOS. Without them, Smart Bidding has a blind spot on a growing share of your traffic. The toggle being "on" is not enough - the data has to actually flow.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Enabled AND hashed data visible in Tag Assistant test |
| FAIL | Disabled, or enabled but no data flowing |
Threshold: Zero active Critical disapprovals in Google Merchant Center.
How to check: Go to Merchant Center > Diagnostics. Filter to "Critical" issues. You should see zero.
Why it matters: Critical disapprovals mean products are not showing in Shopping results at all. You are paying for campaign infrastructure that cannot serve ads on those products. And Google penalizes accounts with persistent disapprovals by reducing auction eligibility for your other products too.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Zero critical disapprovals |
| FAIL | Any active critical disapprovals |
Threshold: At least 1 purchaser list with 1,000+ entries uploaded to Google Ads.
How to check: Go to Google Ads > Tools > Audience Manager > Your Data Segments. Look for a customer list based on purchase data. Check the entry count and upload date. The list should have 1,000+ matched entries and be updated within the last 90 days.
Why it matters: Customer lists give Google first-party signal to learn from. In Performance Max, these lists directly influence audience signals. In Smart Bidding, they help the algorithm identify patterns in who actually buys. Without this data, the algorithm starts cold on every campaign.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | 1,000+ entries, uploaded/refreshed within 90 days |
| FAIL | No list, list under 1,000, or last update older than 90 days |
Threshold: Branded and prospecting traffic running in separate campaigns.
How to check: Look at your campaign list. Branded search should be in its own campaign. Prospecting search should be separate. Shopping or Performance Max for branded queries should be separate from prospecting Shopping/Performance Max.
Why it matters: Branded traffic converts at 10-15%. Prospecting converts at 1-3%. Blend them in one campaign and your blended data is useless. You cannot tell what is actually working. When the algorithm optimizes a blended campaign, it gravitates toward the easy branded conversions and starves prospecting of budget.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Branded and prospecting clearly separated at the campaign level |
| FAIL | Branded and prospecting mixed in the same campaign |
Threshold: Brand name + top 5 misspellings negated in all prospecting campaigns.
How to check: Go to each prospecting campaign > Negative Keywords. Search for your brand name. Check common misspellings, abbreviations, and variations. All should be present as negative keywords.
Why it matters: Without brand negatives, prospecting campaigns capture people already searching for you by name. Your prospecting ROAS looks inflated because branded queries are mixed in. You think cold traffic is working at 6x ROAS when real prospecting performance is 2x. Budget decisions based on this data will burn money.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | Brand name + misspellings negated across all prospecting campaigns |
| FAIL | Missing brand negatives, or only partial coverage |
Threshold: Click-through attribution window set to 7-day minimum.
How to check: Go to Google Ads > Goals > Conversions > your purchase action > Settings. Check the click-through conversion window. It should be 7 days or longer, depending on your product's purchase cycle.
Why it matters: A 1-day click window on a product with a 5-day consideration period means you miss conversions that you actually drove. The algorithm gets incomplete feedback. It stops bidding on keywords and audiences that actually work because it never sees the delayed conversions they produce.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | 7-day click minimum (or longer, matched to your sales cycle) |
| FAIL | Set to 1-day click, or never reviewed from default |
Threshold: Title length over 70 characters for 90%+ of products.
How to check: Export your product feed. Check the character count of the title field for each product. Calculate what percentage have 70+ characters.
Why it matters: Short titles miss keyword matching opportunities. Google matches Shopping queries to product titles. A title that says "Blue T-Shirt" matches far fewer searches than "Men's Organic Cotton Blue T-Shirt - Crew Neck, Regular Fit, Machine Washable." Longer titles mean more query coverage, which means more impressions at the same bid.
| Status | Criteria |
|---|---|
| PASS | 90%+ of products have titles with 70+ characters |
| FAIL | Significant share of products below 70 characters |
| Result | Count |
|---|---|
| PASS | ___/9 |
| FAIL | ___ |
Required: 9/9 to proceed to scaling.
If any item fails, that is your priority this week. Do not add budget until all 9 pass. Every dollar you spend scaling on a broken foundation produces a fraction of its potential return.
Score each element 0-10, where 0 = completely missing and 10 = airtight. Be honest. Generous scoring here only hurts you later.

Your foundation will support aggressive budget increases without cracking. Move to building your scaling structure: feed optimization, search architecture, bidding progression, and pre-sell pages.
Your priority: Stop optimizing foundation and start deploying budget into prospecting campaigns with strict ROAS targets.
You have a workable foundation with holes. Identify every element scoring below 6 and address it before adding budget.
Your priority: Spend 1-2 weeks closing the gaps. Scaling on a 65 will cost you 2-3 months of wasted spend that you would save by fixing foundations now.
Every dollar you add will be partially wasted. The algorithm is working with incomplete or wrong signals. It will find the wrong customers at the wrong cost.
Your priority: Focus entirely on foundation work until you hit 80+. This is not discouraging - it is protecting your budget. One week of foundation work saves months of wasteful spending.
Those are your immediate priorities. Block time this week. Most foundation items take 1-4 hours to fix. Do them in this order:
Look at your lowest-scoring elements. Those are your highest-impact improvements. Fix the lowest two scores first - they represent the biggest drag on your scaling potential.
You are in position to scale. The next step is building the campaign architecture that turns this foundation into a growth engine: the four-pocket structure, bidding progression, budget deployment sequence, and advanced plays like competitor campaigns and Demand Gen.
This audit validates your foundation - the prerequisites for scaling. It does not cover:
The Google Ads AI Agentic System ($4,997+) covers all four phases - Foundation, Structure, Scale, and Operate - across 14 modules. It includes the budget deployment sequence, bidding progression framework, and the complete operating system that keeps performance growing after you scale.
If your foundation score is 80+, the Agentic System is what turns that foundation into six-figure monthly spend.
Built from 20+ brands. From $20K to $500K/month spend levels.
