How to Extract Winning Ad Copy from 3.4 Million Subreddits - For Free
Most advertisers spend $10k+ on customer research surveys.
We use Reddit for free. And it works better. (Look, I know that sounds too good to be true.)
Here's why: Reddit has 97.2 million daily users spending 20-30 minutes per day telling each other exactly how they search for products, what they care about, and what language resonates with them.
It's unfiltered. It's authentic. And nobody's mining it.
One headline scraped from online reviews generated 400% more clicks than professional copywriting. That's not a typo. The customer's exact words beat the copywriter's polished version by 4x.
(The copywriter was not happy.)
This playbook gives you the exact system we use to extract Google Ads search terms and Meta creative angles from Reddit - in about 2 hours of work.
After running this process across 30+ client accounts over 18 months, here's what you'll walk away with:
We call this the A.N.G.L.E. Method. Because that's what you're finding - the exact angle that converts.
| Stage | What You Do | Time | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| A - Audit | Find your target subreddits | 20 min | 5-10 subreddits |
| N - Navigate | Identify high-value discussions | 30 min | 20-30 thread URLs |
| G - Grab | Extract customer language | 45 min | 50+ phrases in VOC file |
| L - Layer | Map to ad copy | 30 min | Search terms + 10 hooks |
| E - Evaluate | Test and refine | Ongoing | Performance baseline |
Total setup time: About 2 hours.
Let's break down each stage.
Goal: Find 5-10 subreddits where your customers discuss problems your product solves.
Method 1: Direct Reddit Search
Go to reddit.com and search for:
Sort by "Top" and "All Time" to find the most active communities.
Method 2: r/findareddit
This subreddit exists specifically to help you find other subreddits. Post or search: "Looking for subreddits about [your topic]"
Method 3: Google Site Search
Search: site:reddit.com "[your product/problem]"
This finds threads Google has indexed - often the highest-quality discussions.
Method 4: Competitor Brand Search
Search Reddit for your competitors' brand names. Where customers discuss your competitors, they'll discuss you.
Include subreddits that have:
Exclude subreddits that are:
| Subreddit | Members | Last Post | Type of Discussions | Relevance (1-5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r/_________ | ____k | _______ | __________________ | __/5 |
| r/_________ | ____k | _______ | __________________ | __/5 |
| r/_________ | ____k | _______ | __________________ | __/5 |
| r/_________ | ____k | _______ | __________________ | __/5 |
| r/_________ | ____k | _______ | __________________ | __/5 |
Example: If you sell email marketing software, don't just look at r/emailmarketing. Look at r/ecommerce, r/shopify, r/smallbusiness - anywhere people discuss email as part of a bigger challenge.
Goal: Identify 20-30 high-value threads worth mining.
1. Complaint Threads
Search within your target subreddits for:
These reveal pain points that become Meta hooks.
2. Comparison Threads
Search for:
These reveal what features/benefits actually matter.
3. Recommendation Threads
Search for:
These reveal search intent language (gold for Google Ads).
4. Success Story Threads
Search for:
These reveal desired outcomes and transformation language.
5. Question Threads
Search for:
These reveal confusion points and knowledge gaps.
High-value thread indicators:
Low-value thread indicators:
| Thread URL | Type | Upvotes | Comments | Key Topic | Mined? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| reddit.com/r/___/... | Complaint | ___ | ___ | _________ | [ ] |
| reddit.com/r/___/... | Comparison | ___ | ___ | _________ | [ ] |
| reddit.com/r/___/... | Recommend | ___ | ___ | _________ | [ ] |
Save these URLs. You'll reference them in the next stage.
Goal: Extract 50+ phrases into a Voice-of-Customer (VOC) data file.
This is the core of the method. You're not summarizing what people say - you're copying their exact words.
Exact. Not paraphrased. Their words beat your words every time. We learned this after paraphrasing quotes on 3 campaigns and watching CTR drop 30% compared to verbatim versions.
1. Pain Points (Meta Hooks)
Look for language that expresses:
Example from r/ecommerce:
"Spent $5k on ads last month and have no idea what actually worked. The attribution is a mess."
This becomes a Meta hook: "Spent $5k on ads with no idea what worked?"
2. Search Language (Google Ads)
Look for how people phrase what they're looking for:
Example from r/shopify:
"Looking for an email platform that actually integrates with Shopify inventory"
This becomes search terms: "email platform shopify inventory integration", "best email tool for shopify"
3. Desired Outcomes (Benefits Copy)
Look for what success looks like to them:
4. Objections (Overcome in Ads)
Look for hesitations and concerns:
Create a spreadsheet with 4 tabs:
Tab 1: Pain Points
| Quote | Source Thread | Emotional Intensity (1-5) | Potential Hook |
|---|---|---|---|
| "..." | reddit.com/... | __/5 | _____________ |
Tab 2: Search Language
| Quote | Source Thread | Inferred Search Term | Volume (if known) |
|---|---|---|---|
| "..." | reddit.com/... | _____________ | _____________ |
Tab 3: Desired Outcomes
| Quote | Source Thread | Benefit Statement |
|---|---|---|
| "..." | reddit.com/... | _____________ |
Tab 4: Objections
| Quote | Source Thread | Counter-Message |
|---|---|---|
| "..." | reddit.com/... | _____________ |
DO:
DON'T:
= 50+ phrases total
This gives you enough raw material for months of ad copy.
Goal: Transform your VOC data into Google search terms and Meta hooks.
Step 1: Group Similar Language
Look at your "Search Language" tab. Group quotes by theme:
Example themes:
Step 2: Extract Core Phrases
From each quote, pull the core search phrase:
| Original Quote | Extracted Search Term |
|---|---|
| "Looking for an email platform that actually integrates with Shopify inventory" | email platform shopify integration |
| "Need something for abandoned cart emails that doesn't cost a fortune" | abandoned cart email cheap |
| "What's the best Klaviyo alternative for small stores" | klaviyo alternative small business |
Step 3: Expand with Variations
For each core phrase, create variations:
Step 4: Check Search Volume
Run your extracted terms through:
Prioritize terms with volume that your competitors might not be targeting.
Step 1: Rank Pain Points by Intensity
Sort your "Pain Points" tab by emotional intensity (5 = highest).
The most emotionally charged complaints become your best hooks. (Emotion is what stops the scroll.)
Step 2: Transform Into Hook Formats
Take each high-intensity pain point and try these formats:
Format A: The Mirror Turn their words into a question.
Format B: The Admission Start with "I used to..."
Format C: The Challenge Start with "Stop..."
Format D: The Reveal Start with "Most people don't know..."
Step 3: Build Your Hook Bank
Create 10 hooks minimum, covering:
Google Ads Output:
Meta Ads Output:
Goal: Test your Reddit-sourced copy and build a feedback loop.

This is not a one-time exercise. The brands winning with this method return to Reddit monthly.
Based on case studies and our own client work:
Don't expect every Reddit phrase to be a winner. But your hit rate will be much higher than brainstorming in a conference room.
(Which is a low bar, but still.)
The Beachway Rehab Case (From CopyHackers)
Situation: Addiction treatment center struggling to find test-worthy messages. Couldn't easily interview past patients due to sensitivity.
Method: Instead of Reddit (this was 2014), Joanna Wiebe mined Amazon reviews of addiction recovery books. Same principle, different source.
Process:
Result: The headline "If you think you need rehab, you do" (mined directly from reviews) beat the control "Your Addiction Ends Here" by:
Why it worked: The customer's words matched the prospect's internal dialogue. They saw themselves in that headline. (This is the whole point of voice-of-customer research.)
Your takeaway: Reddit offers more context than Amazon reviews for most B2B and e-commerce products. You get full discussions, not just star ratings. The method is the same. The source is deeper.

DIY Automation: If you're technical, you can use Reddit's API to pull comments containing specific keywords and export to CSV. We built a simple scraper that pulls 500+ comments in under a minute. But for most use cases, manual mining is more insightful - you catch nuance that automation misses.

Monthly:
The brands that win with this method don't do it once. They build Reddit research into their monthly workflow. We've seen accounts maintain a 25-30% CTR advantage over 6+ months by refreshing their VOC file monthly.
You're not trying to be clever. You're trying to be clear.
The best ad copy doesn't come from your imagination. It comes from your customers' mouths.
Reddit is 3.4 million subreddits of customers telling you exactly what to say. For free. Stop guessing. Start mining.
We built a Google Sheet with all the tabs, formulas, and structure you need. Just drop in your Reddit quotes and it organizes everything for you.
Reply "ANGLE" and I'll send it over.
(Must be following)
The A.N.G.L.E. Method came from research failures:
Mistake: Summarizing instead of copying. Early versions paraphrased Reddit quotes. Lost all the magic. The power is in exact language - their words, not our interpretation. Now we copy verbatim and only edit for ad format constraints.
Mistake: Mining inactive subreddits. We found great threads in dead communities. The language was outdated. Customer problems had evolved. Now we verify subreddit activity (posts in last 7 days) before mining. Fresh data matters.
Mistake: Skipping validation. We turned Reddit quotes into hooks without checking search volume. Some angles had zero demand. Wasted creative resources. Now we always validate with Keyword Planner before building campaigns.
Mistake: Going too niche. Found a hyper-specific pain point mentioned by 3 users. Built a whole campaign around it. Zero conversions. Small sample size led to false signal. Now we look for patterns across multiple threads, not isolated complaints.
The A.N.G.L.E. Method exists because we learned what doesn't work first. Follow it and skip our expensive lessons.
